MIDI was proposed by Ikutaro Kakehashi, the founder of the iconic electronic musical instrument manufacturer Roland, in the early 1980s.

Ikutaro Kakehashi, who founded the Roland Corporation in 1972, has died aged 87. Despite barriers to formal education, he pursued an engineering career that included watch and radio fix before he started developing amplifiers and electric organs in the 1950s.
