Rising Pune Supergiants rode on superb batting by captain Steven Smith and Ajinkya Rahane to defeat Mumbai Indians by seven wickets in the second game of the 2017 Indian Premier League (IPL) at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune on Thursday.

Mumbai skipper Rohit Sharma's form at the top will be important, while Kieron Pollard and Jos Buttler's big hits, and veteran spinner Harbhajan Singh's guile would decide how the team would fare tomorrow.

Australian Steve Smith led the Rising Pune Supergiants charge with his score of 84 not out, while Cumbrian Stokes chipped in with three boundaries during his quick-fire knock.

It came after the toss in Pune, where RPS' new captain Steve Smith won the toss and elected to ball first against the visitors.

With Ravichandran Ashwin being ruled out of the tournament, the bowling responsibility will fall on the shoulders of Stokes, and South Africa spinner Imran Tahir. Pollard conceded just three runs of his first three balls of the final over, but Smith finished a thrilling match with two sixes to the on-side.

Rahane reached to his 32nd T20 fifty with a four off Hardik Pandya in the ninth over but he fell two overs later while attempting a pull shot with Nitish Rana taking a smart catch at deep square leg.

Smith then joined Rahane in the middle and the duo added 58 runs in the space of seven overs to lay the foundation of a successful run chase.

Bowling: RPS: Ashok Dinda 4-0-57-0; Deepak Chahar 2-0-21-0; Ben Stokes 4-0-36-1; Imran Tahir 4-0-28-3; Adam Zampa 3-0-26-1; Rajat Bhatia 3-0-14-2.

But their 184-8 was overtaken with a ball to go by Smith and MS Dhoni (12).

But Pandya's late flourish negated Tahir's fine effort as Mumbai rattled up 64 runs in the last five overs.
