Russian Federation arrests six 'IS recruiters' in St Petersburg

Arthur Frazier | 06 April, 2017, 03:00

Six people from Central Asia were detained in St Petersburg on suspicion of collaborating with terror organisations including the Islamic State, Russian authorities said.

Officials have said the suicide attacker behind Monday's blast that killed 14 people in St. Petersburg was a native of the Central Asian country of Kyrgyzstan.

The detainees are suspected of being active since November 2015.

At the places of residence of suspects searches were carried out, during which Islamic extremist literature and important items for investigation of the case were confiscated.

"As for Akbarzhon Dzhalilov, who, according to the investigation data, set off an explosive device in the train's vehicle, his identity has been confirmed by the results of a DNA test", the committee's spokeswoman Svetlata Petrenko said.

Investigators rounded up the suspects, from the Central Asian region of the former Soviet Union, but found no immediate evidence of their involvement in the attack.

Investigators scoured the St. Petersburg home of Dzhalilov and reviewed surveillance footage that shows him leaving his home with a bag and a backpack.

The remains of Akbarzhon Dzhalilov, 22, were recovered from the scene of the bombing, Russian authorities said on Tuesday.

The bomb detonated inside the train as it traveled between two major hub stations in the center of the city.

"We see that, unfortunately, the situation is not improving".

Nikitin, who said that he did not have problems when traveling from St. Petersburg to Moscow, told Muslim news agency Islam News that he was also told he had lost his job as a truck driver.

"We know that each of our countries, practically every one, is a possible and potential target of terrorist attacks", he said.

In a meeting on Wednesday with the heads of security services from most of Russia's Central Asian neighbors, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned of the terrorist threat facing the region.
