Claire McCaskill announces she'll filibuster Neil Gorsuch

Warren Dawson | 03 April, 2017, 04:20

Politics aside, Manchin said Gorsuch, a judge on the USA 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, has an impressive resume and deserves the courtesy of a vote.

With Democratic Party resistance to President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch still in flux, American voters are taking to the streets on Saturday to stage a "People's Filibuster" against the conservative judge.

An outside political group backing Judge Neil Gorsuch's Supreme Court nomination is launching an ad campaign pressuring Senate Democrats to support him as the Senate prepares for a final fight over his confirmation next week.

"I think it's really interesting that the Republicans wanted to out the fact that I was so honest about how torn I am", she added.

She cites a "rigid ideology that always puts the little guy under the boot of corporations".

"I could not find any just reason with all his qualifications and all his experience and how he's ranked as one of the best jurists", Manchin said.

Federer appeared poised to cruise to victory after such a dominant set, but Berdych was undeterred by his slow start. Berdych, however, flinched and couldn't close out the Swiss, who has reached his first Miami semifinal in six years.

Finally, McCaskill said Gorsuch's nomination betrays President Trump's promise to support working people and "drain the swamp" of special interests and lobbyists.

She said she rejects Gorsuch's nomination because he would "continue an activist position that states that corporations have the same rights as people". McCaskill, who is up for re-election in 2018, has faced intense pressure to confirm Trump's pick, especially in her home state, where Trump won by 19 points. "This is a time, though, where you have such an exceptionally qualified nominee, who has conducted himself so well and with dignity and respect". And senators of both parties say that proceeding with the rules change could ultimately lead to complete elimination of the minority party's ability to block legislation via filibuster, one of the few remaining mechanisms that force bipartisan cooperation in Congress. Getting to 60 votes would require six more Democrats to back Gorsuch. That fits in nicely with the crowd that's arguing Democrats should preserve the option to filibuster the next nominee-as if the outcome would be any different during the next Supreme Court battle.

But she's also among 10 Democrats in the Senate who hail from states where voters favored now-President Donald Trump; he carried Missouri by nearly 19 percentage points. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota became the first two Democrats to announce their support for Gorsuch, and the only ones so far. Or vote to block Gorsuch and prompt Republicans to permanently change Senate rules to eliminate the filibuster? Michael Bennet of Colorado, Jon Tester of Montana and Joe Donnelly of IN, and are also hoping for support from Sen.

Thirteen Democrats have yet to announce whether they would vote against Gorsuch or support a filibuster.

But, she said, she was also "very uncomfortable voting for a strategy that opens up a process where it only takes 51 votes" to approve a Supreme Court nominee.
