Seattle challenges Trump over executive order on 'sanctuary cities'

Warren Dawson | 01 April, 2017, 01:48

"Once again, this new administration has made a decision to bully", he told reporters.

"As we continue to ensure that monies that go for law enforcement only go to cities who are participating in an effective, collegial, cooperative way with the federal government, that that would also send a message". The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency deems at least 118 jurisdictions as sanctuaries.

Seattle Mayor Ed Murray told reporters the Constitution forbade the federal government from pressuring cities, "yet that is exactly what the president's order does". On Monday, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions issued a fresh warning to sanctuary cities at the White House, echoing the policy sketched out in the executive order. The Trump administration issued a fresh threat to withhold or revoke law enforcement grant money from communities that refuse to cooperate with federal efforts to find and deport immigrants in the country illegally.

There is no standard definition of a "sanctuary" jurisdiction and even self-identified sanctuary cities like Seattle can not stop the feds from arresting immigrants. About $55 million of Seattle's 2017 operating expenses comes from federal funding, and more funding is dedicated to longer-term capital investments, the city said. "We will remain a city welcoming of immigrants who have helped make our city the safest big city in the nation", de Blasio said. Earlier this year, Trump signed an executive order to strip grants from these cities on the grounds that they're breaking federal law. The federal law referenced by the Attorney General (8 U.S.C. 1373) does not require any state or local jurisdiction to honor immigration detainers.

Missing girl, 15, assaulted on Facebook Live, police say
Facebook has since taken down the video, but her mother showed WGN News four screens grabs that are too graphic for TV. Police said that of the 40 people who watched the Facebook video, shockingly none had reported the matter to them.

Notwithstanding any other provision of Federal, State, or local law, a Federal, State, or local government entity or official may not prohibit, or in any way restrict, any government entity or official from sending to, or receiving from, the Immigration and Naturalization Service information regarding the citizenship or immigration status, lawful or unlawful, of any individual.

Murray and Holmes argued the opposite. "Public safety depends on trust between law enforcement and those they bravely serve; yet, again and again, President Trump's draconian policies only serve to undercut that trust". San Francisco became the first city to sue the Trump administration for that reason back in January, and several cities and counties have piled on the lawsuits since then.

According to federal law, they are required to inform the feds whenever they have an illegal immigrant in custody, even if he or she is not guilty of any crime.

"Chelsea feels very strongly that treating all residents regardless of their immigration status with dignity and respect is not only the appropriate policy to have but it's also the one that secures our city the most".
