ISIS claims responsibility for Baghdad Wednesday attack

Erik Tate | 31 March, 2017, 02:09

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres arrived in Baghdad on Thursday for an official visit to Iraq, according to an Iraqi Foreign Ministry source.

Since the start of the Mosul military operation, more than 350,000 people have fled the fighting, according to United Nations figures. Of those an estimated 76,000 people have returned to their areas, but suffering lack of services. Since the launching of the assault on western Mosul last month, Iraqi authorities have stated that more than 200,000 civilians have fled their homes.

IS issued a statement claiming the attack, saying it was carried out by a suicide bomber driving a truck "carrying several tonnes of explosive material".

At least 15 people have been killed in a suicide auto bomb attack on a police checkpoint in Iraq's capital Baghdad, officials say.

The US-led coalition has intensified the battle for Mosul even as it admits that its bombs probably killed more than 130 civilians in a single airstrike two weeks ago.

At least 15 people were killed on Wednesday when a suicide truck bomb exploded near a checkpoint in Baghdad.

Three policemen were among the dead while the rest were civilians, and a number of police were also wounded, the officials said.

Iraqi and coalition officials have repeatedly warned that after Mosul, IS is likely to return to its insurgent roots as it loses more territory in both Iraq and neighbouring Syria.
