They had failed to check out of their hotel on Tuesday and their vehicle was found near Lake Louise.

The missing snowshoers were recovered on Friday morning at about 10:30 a.m., after avalanche conditions were deemed safe enough to conduct the recovery operation, Parks Canada said.

Mounties were contacted Tuesday by staff from a hotel that two guests from Boston hadn't checked out of their room in Field, B.C., just west of the Alberta border.

Parks Canada said Highway 93 North was to remain closed until at least Sunday.

"Parks Canada Safety Specialists hiked up the Mount Hector trail and came upon an avalanche scene where they were able to determine that the two individuals had been caught in that avalanche", said Peters.

Canadian authorities would not be disclosing the identities of the pair, said police spokesman Corporal Curtis Peters late Friday afternoon.

Parks Canada believes the two snowshoers from Boston were caught in an avalanche on Saturday or Sunday.

The risk of another avalanche was so severe that police could not send a search team any further.

Investigators also picked up signals from transceivers in the area, but conditions were too unsafe to start searching until Friday.

Their families have been notified of the investigation's findings, the CBC reported. The hotel had told officials that the pair were on a snowshoeing trip.
