First-time claims for USA unemployment benefits saw a modest decrease in the week ended March 11th, according to a report released by the Labor Department on Thursday.

The Georgia labor department said unemployment rose by 0.4 percent in Catoosa County to 5 percent and increased in Walker County by 0.1 percent to 5.4 percent.

The rate rose as the number of jobs declined, while the number of new layoffs increased. "The Kansas portion, which had 43 percent of the area's workforce, gained 2,000 jobs (0.4 percent) since January 2016". "Job growth came in the service industries, including trade, transportation and warehousing, along with federal and local government", the department said. Job growth came mostly in the service industries, including education and health services. Most of the increase came in construction and arts, entertainment and recreation.

Total non-farm jobs in Indiana County decreased 1,700 to 31,000 in January.

The labor force includes those who are employed and those without jobs but actively looking for work. Over the year, the number of people in the labor force increased by 5,627, as the number of employed grew by 5,549 and the number of unemployed increased by 78.

Ames, Iowa, held on to the title of the lowest unemployment rate in the nation, at just 2.3 percent in January. The number of unemployed residents rose by 797 to 4,500, while the number of employed residents increased by 387 to 58,856.

Metro Gainesville and the Georgia Mountains region had the lowest area jobless rate at 4.8 percent, while the Three Rivers region had the highest at 7.4 percent.

Area employers had 16,800 more employees on their payrolls in January 2017 than a month earlier and 25,900 more than in January 2016, the metropolitan area report said. Throughout the state, 64,018 new job openings were posted.

For the week ending March 11, initial claims for unemployment insurance fell by 2,000 to 241,000, seasonally adjusted, a result largely in line with analyst expectations, and retracing a small part of the prior week's jump.
