Scottish leader to UK premier Don't block independence vote UK's Labour will not oppose call for 2nd independence ref

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon demanded an independence referendum to be held in late 2018 or early 2019, once the terms of Britain's exit from the European Union have become clearer.

The British PM says it's a deeply regrettable move, and a show of tunnel vision.

Most people agree Scotland leaving the United Kingdom would be bad for Britain, according to new polling which finds voters divided on a second independence referendum.

Sturgeon will ask the Scottish Parliament next week to approve plans for a referendum on Scottish independence that she hopes will take place in the six months leading up to the UK's likely departure date from the European Union of March 2019.

Scotland is looking set to hold a second referendum on whether or not it should become an independent country.

British Prime Minister Theresa May has rejected the idea of a second vote as "divisive", less than three years after Scots voted by 55 percent to reject independence, and accused the SNP of playing politics.

As of Wednesday afternoon, just over 120,000 people had signed the petition, which is nearly 25,000 less than the whole of Dundee, Scotland's fourth largest city.

She said: "We remain on track with the timetable I set out six months ago, and I will return to this House before the end of this month to notify when I have formally triggered Article 50 and begun the process through which the United Kingdom will leave the European Union".

Speaking earlier today, the first minister said she plans to trigger another Independence referendum by autumn 2018 at the earliest.

A BMG survey of 1,009 people for Scottish broadsheet The Herald found 56 per cent of those who expressed views were against another independence vote before Brexit occurs. "Another such referendum would split society and would cause enormous economic uncertainty at the worst possible moment". Sturgeon responded by calling any attempt by May to block the vote a "disastrous move" and pledged to move forward with the idea.

On the other hand, Sturgeon is keen on having the referendum before Brexit takes place to maximise the possibility of Scotland remaining or swiftly rejoining the bloc.
