A CNN review of the site found photos of women in uniforms from different branches of the military - and nude and partially nude images.

Mattis referred to the actions of the members of Marines United and other such groups engaging in such behavior as "unacceptable and counter to unit cohesion".

"It never makes sense to me that the marines are so anxious about how you tie your bootlaces or put on your chevrons, and yet they allow so much harassment to continue", she said.

Active duty Marine Marisa Woytek, left, and former Marine Erika Butner, claimed Thursday that their pictures were posted to a Facebook group without their consent.

Butner, 23, who served for four years before leaving the Marines in 2016, said she contacted investigators in January and told them there was an online storage drive that contained "indecent photos of women from all military services, organized by name, rank and even where they were stationed". "As a Marine Corps veteran, I am disheartened and disgusted with this scandal", she told a news conference.

"They're going to look at what's going on, while developing plans for corrective actions and recommendations to policies, procedures, education and training of Marines that will prevent this in the future and the culture - I'd say subculture - that may have given rise to this", he said. "It is a direct attack on our ethos and legacy", Green wrote in response to the allegations, "It is inconsistent with our Core Values, and it impedes our ability to perform our mission".

"We are not able to confirm that Marines are participating in the site AnonIB", Alvis said in a statement to ABC News.

At least one Marine, who shot illicit photographs, was discharged from active duty, while "hundreds of Marines" were being investigated. Marines stalked the women on social media and egged each other on to find and share photos, some taken in locker rooms and showers when the women were not aware, others shared by former boyfriends.

In statements, the Air Force and Navy said they were looking into reports they had been connected to similar scandals.

Gen. Robert B. Neller, the Marines' top officer, has characterized the postings as "distasteful", adding, "I expect Marines to give their all to be the best human beings, teammates, and Marines possible".

Neller also said he will be testifying on Capitol Hill to the Senate Armed Services Committee next week about the scandal.

A staffer at The Daily Show with Trevor Noah has started a GoFundMe campaign to support the women who have been victims of a private Facebook page called Marines United that posted nude photos of female service members.

Marines United's activity was first uncovered by The War Horse, a non-profit news organisation run by marine veteran Thomas Brennan.

"Thinking back, why wasn't I talking about this", he said. "And women, they did their thing, and I don't know what else they got to do to, like, say 'Yeah, OK, good to go, '" Neller said.
