Why an endangered turtle needed surgery to remove almost 1000 coins

Arthur Frazier | 07 March, 2017, 00:51

Omsin is Thai for "piggy bank" - the name given to the green sea turtle last month by scientists and veterinarians who rescued her at the point of death, shell bulging, infected, barely able to swim for all the fortune she'd swallowed.

The surgeons did not expect the surgery on the unfortunate ailing turtle to take so long - until faced with the huge coin cache in its stomache, which required a bigger cut than they originally planned.

A 25-year-old turtle in Thailand ate more than 900 coins tossed into her pool.

.

Bangkok specialists operated on the female turtle - nicknamed Bank - whose indigestible diet is thought to have accumulated in the pool over many years in the eastern town of Sri Racha.

There was no immediate estimate of the value of the coins, some of them foreign and many corroded.

The green sea turtle had been living at a conservation centre in Sriracha, Chonburi, about an hour and a half south east of the capital Bangkok. A detailed 3-D scan revealed the source of the problem, as well as two fish hooks, which were also removed on Monday. But, reports Reuters, those good-luck gestures nearly turned fatal after veterinarians discovered she had been eating the coins. After that, Osmin will undergo six months of physical therapy.

Without the operation the turtle could have died, said Nantarika Chansue, head of Chulalongkorn University's veterinary medical aquatic animal research center. But for one sea turtle, the tradition has brought nothing but misfortune. The coins weighed a total of 11 pounds and amounted to $57, according to the Daily Mail.

The surgery was paid for by a successful donation drive, where around 15,000 baht (over $400) was raised by the public.
