Elon Musk Says We Must Become Cyborgs To Interface With Artificial Intelligence

Javier Burns | 15 February, 2017, 00:57

A computer can communicate at a trillion bits per second, Musk explained, while the fastest humans can do about 10 bits per second. "I do think there is a path to having some sort of merger of biological intelligence and machine intelligence", he said, which would solve the problem of us losing control over these AIs.

One of the main advantages computers have over humans is the speed at which they can send out information, Musk said.

Humans worrying about machines' future potency and world-dominating potential is nothing new; there's been like three movie franchises about that idea.

Tesla announced past year plans to build self-driving technology into all its electric cars.

On Monday, Musk told the audience that AI is "smarter than the smartest human on the earth" and warned of the dangers of this situation.

Musk has spoken often on his deep seated fear of deep artificial intelligence.

Last year, Tesla Chief Elon Musk mentioned that the production of the Model 3 would begin by July 2017 - a very ambitious timeline according to many analysts and suppliers.

Mass Effect Andromeda will have more meaningful sidequests, according to Bioware
And it was very important for us that the quantity of scope doesn't downgrade the quality of whatever your are doing there. The new approach to side quests will hopefully engage the player in these smaller stories.

The Tesla founder also noted that the most immediate impact of AI "from a technology standpoint" is autonomous cars, which his company is developing. This is great for most people, says Musk, but presents a big problem for the 12-15 percent of the world's workforce who are paid to drive things around.

The emirate, seen as the most diversified in the Gulf, has a population of 2.5 million people, a lot of them expatriates.

In an age when AI threatens to become widespread, humans would be useless, so there's a need to merge with machines, according to Musk.

Adding to that notion, Musk said some people think he is an alien.

Musk retains some skepticism about the effects of UBI - he has voiced concerns what will happen to people's sense of objective if they have less of a need (or no need at all) to work. "We need to figure out new roles for what do those people do, but it will be very disruptive and very quick".

Musk went on to note that with so many people unable to find work, the government will have to introduce something like a Universal Basic Income, a guaranteed amount of money each month that is enough to live on.

As for the distant future, Musk said that what we predict right now won't look much like what actually happens 50 years from now.
