Bus Crash in Taiwan Leaves 32 People Killed, 16 Injured

Erik Tate | 15 February, 2017, 00:59

In July 2016, another bus crash accident happened outside Taipei killing 25 tourists, including Chinese citizens.

"Some of the bodies were found metres away from the bus, along with a dozen seats apparently tossed out of the coach after its top was torn apart". Taiwanese television footage showed the bus careening toward a road barrier at a highway curve before flipping on its side.

Thirty-two people, all Taiwanese, were confirmed dead and the remaining passengers were sent to hospitals for treatment.

Taiwan News cited a preliminary investigation by highway police as saying that the group was on its way back to Taipei follow a trip to the Wuling Farm to view the cherry blossom. "[Police] do not rule out that possibility the bus driver was worn out due to long hours of work as one of the causes". Freeway authorities analyzing the bus' dashboard camera revealed that it was traveling 60 kph at the time it started to overturn, 20 kph over the exit ramp speed limit.

The driver was reported to have worked about 14 hours, picking up passengers from 6.30 am until the crash at about 9pm.

Protesters shame, block entrance for Education Secretary Betsy DeVos during school visit
One held a "Black Lives Matter" sign and chanted, repeatedly, "Shame!" " You should be so proud of yourself ". "Go back. DeVos's nomination for education secretary attracted more public outcry than any other of Trump's cabinet picks.

"Prosecutors need to get on the site", said cabinet spokesman Hsu Kuo-yung on live TV.

Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen and Premier Lin Chuan gave their condolences and instructed officials to uncover the cause of the accident at the earliest. The tour was organized by a local tourist company.

The tragedy has raised major safety questions about Taiwan's tour bus industry, prompting the Transport and Communications Ministry to introduce measures to beef up safety standards.

It comes after a bus inferno in July a year ago killed 25 Chinese holidaymakers on board, and is the latest in a series of deadly incidents that have tarnished Taiwan's safety record.
