The biggest storm to hit the northeastern parts of the United States this winter dropped 30cm or more of snow along the New York-to-Boston corridor on Thursday, turning roads treacherous, grounding flights and giving millions of people weather whiplash a day after temperatures soared as high as 15C.

The storm blasting the Northeast with snow and blustery winds is wreaking havoc on air travel, canceling thousands of flights Thursday.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio tweeted Wednesday night that his city would close its schools.

All New Jersey state offices are closed for non-essential employees, Gov. Christie says.

"A Blizzard Warning is now in effect for Nassau and Suffolk County 12-18 with heavy snowfall expected".

Residents have been warned about an approaching powerful, fast-moving storm that could deliver more than a foot of snow in some areas.

Motorists along Interstate 90 from Syracuse, New York, to Boston, and along Interstate 95 from Boston to Bangor, Maine, should be prepared for slippery spots Friday night and Saturday. The department assigned 2,400 workers per 12-hour shifts. Other areas including NY and Binghamton also broke snow records. Boston Public Schools are canceled tomorrow as well.

"It's pretty nuts here", Felecia White said as she and friends hunkered down in a restaurant in Newport, Rhode Island, waiting for the weather to improve. Some private businesses like Beneficial Bank on 16th and Chestnut streets opened late and the School District of Philadelphia and the Archdiocese of Philadelphia closed their schools.

February 2006: Snow piled up to 26.9 inches over more than two days, forcing city officials to cancel flights and rail service. By mid-morning, 6.4 inches had accumulated in Danbury and Newtown.

Marra expects the storm to significantly taper off by 3 p.m.

Nor'easters get their name from the winds that blow from the northeast ahead of a storm's arrival as it moves up the Eastern Seaboard, remaining offshore.

The region had a nor'easter on January 24 that jammed roads and caused major disruptions in air travel.

The inclement weather will likely start as rain following the warm streak that pushed temperatures into the mid-60s Wednesday.

Almost 1,700 flights have been cancelled at New York City's three major airports because of the powerful winter storm hitting the region.

The storm is fast moving and by late Thursday night it will be out of NY and Boston and will be heading towards Maine.
